Ideal Weight Calculator
All formulas are for adults. Results shown in lbs and kg.
What is an Ideal Weight Calculator?
An ideal weight calculator estimates a healthy target weight for your height using four established medical formulas. Each formula was developed independently and produces a slightly different result, so showing all four gives you a more balanced reference range than any single number.
How It Works
All four formulas are based on inches over 5 feet (60 inches). Results are in kilograms:
Example
A 5 ft 9 in (69 inches) male.
- Over 60 inches: 9
- Devine: 50 + (2.3 x 9) = 70.7 kg (156 lbs)
- Average across all four formulas: roughly 168-172 lbs
Tips
- These formulas were developed decades ago and do not account for body composition, muscle mass, or frame size. Use them as a rough reference, not a personal target.
- The average of all four formulas tends to be more reliable than any single formula alone.
- A person with a large frame may healthily weigh more than these estimates; a small-framed person may weigh less.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which ideal weight formula is most accurate?
No single formula is most accurate for everyone. Each was developed using different study populations. Looking at the range across all four formulas gives a more useful picture than relying on one. The average is a reasonable starting point.
What if I weigh more than the ideal weight range?
These are population averages, not personal targets. Someone with significant muscle mass will naturally weigh more than the formulas predict. Consult a doctor or dietitian for a personalized assessment that accounts for your body composition.
Do these formulas apply to all body types?
They are designed for average adult frames. People with very large or very small frames, athletes, and older adults may find these estimates less applicable. The formulas also do not account for differences in bone density.
Is ideal weight the same as a healthy weight?
Not necessarily. Health is determined by many factors beyond a number on the scale: blood pressure, metabolic markers, fitness level, and mental wellbeing. A weight slightly outside the ideal range is often perfectly healthy.
