US Holiday Calendar

What is this calendar?

This tool shows the exact dates for all 11 US federal public holidays for any year you choose. Federal holidays are established by law and apply to federal government employees. Most banks, stock markets, and many private employers observe these same days. Toggle any past or future year to plan time off, schedule deadlines, or check when a holiday falls on a specific day of the week.

How Observed Dates Work

When a fixed-date holiday falls on a weekend, the federal government observes it on a nearby weekday:

Holiday falls on Saturday : observed the Friday before
Holiday falls on Sunday   : observed the Monday after

Moveable holidays (MLK Day, Presidents Day, etc.) always land on a specific weekday, so they never need an observed adjustment.

Tips

  • Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021. Years before that will still show it for reference.
  • Columbus Day is observed by the federal government but many states and cities have replaced it with Indigenous Peoples' Day.
  • Stock markets follow their own holiday schedule, which mostly overlaps with federal holidays but has some differences (e.g., markets close early on Christmas Eve some years).

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there 11 or 12 federal holidays?

There are 11 permanent federal public holidays established by law. Occasionally the president proclaims an additional one-time holiday (for example, a national day of mourning after a president's death). Those are not included here as they cannot be predicted in advance.

Do all employees get federal holidays off?

Federal holidays are mandatory only for federal government employees. Private employers are not required by federal law to give these days off or to provide extra pay for them, though many choose to follow the same schedule.

When is Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving is always the fourth Thursday in November. This formula was standardized by Congress in 1941. It means Thanksgiving falls between November 22 and November 28 depending on the year.

When is Memorial Day?

Memorial Day is the last Monday in May. It falls between May 25 and May 31. It was changed from a fixed May 30 date to the last Monday in May in 1971 as part of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.
