What is a GPA Calculator?
A GPA (Grade Point Average) calculator converts your letter grades into a 4.0 numerical scale and computes a weighted average based on the number of credit hours each course carries. Courses worth more credits have a larger impact on your overall GPA.
How It Works
Each grade is converted to grade points, then multiplied by credit hours. The total quality points are divided by total credit hours:
Example
A student takes three courses:
| Course | Grade | Credits | Quality Pts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Math | A | 3 | 4.0 × 3 = 12 |
| English | B+ | 4 | 3.3 × 4 = 13.2 |
| History | C | 3 | 2.0 × 3 = 6 |
| GPA = 31.2 / 10 | 3.12 | ||
Tips
- To calculate cumulative GPA, include all courses across all semesters.
- Some schools use a weighted scale that gives extra points for AP or honors courses. Check your institution's specific scale.
- Most graduate programs require a minimum 3.0 GPA. Many competitive programs prefer 3.5 or above.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good GPA?
A 3.0 (B average) is generally considered satisfactory for most purposes. A 3.5 or higher (B+/A− average) is considered strong and is competitive for graduate school, scholarships, and honors programs.
Does an A+ count more than an A?
On the standard 4.0 scale used by most US colleges, both A+ and A are worth 4.0 grade points. Some high schools use a modified scale where A+ = 4.3, but this calculator uses the standard 4.0 cap.
How do I calculate a cumulative GPA?
Enter all courses from every semester. The calculator automatically weights by credit hours, so a 4-credit course has proportionally more impact than a 1-credit course — just as it does on your transcript.
What if my school doesn't use credit hours?
If all your courses have equal weight, enter 1 credit hour for each. The weighted average will equal the simple average of your grade points.
